Hey, Netflix, HBO wants its True Detective back! Just kidding – I certainly don’t want to give the impression that one ripped off the others when it created Narcos. But they do look and feel damn similar in this trailer – and that can only be a good thing.
Narcos tracks the exploits of the notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who will forever be associated the cocaine trade – even more than the maniac Griselda Blanco or distribution mastermind George Jung. There was a time when Escobar’s story was really the only drug cartel story doing the rounds, but in the past few years we’ve learned a lot more – particularly thanks to the brilliant Cocaine Cowboys movies.
So this is a good time to visit the story of Escobar, who made billions every year and practically owned Colombia, as well as the police agents who eventually brought him down.

That looks very slick and textured. I like that the trailer already hints at the complicated nature of the story – that this won’t be a simple good vs. bad guy saga. Perhaps a Scarface for the new millennium.
Narcos starts on Netflix in August.
Meanwhile, here is Reverend Horton Heat explaining how to become a drug dealer…

This looks excellent. Fantastic cast and Wagner Mouro looks amazing as Pablo.
I loved Cocaine Cowboys, it was absolutely gripping.

This may be the TV show I never knew I needed in my life.
