If you’ve never watched a Rob Zombie movie, it’s probably safer to keep it that way. He has a certain style that could make even the most hardened horror fan a little squeamish and while he tends to rely more on gore than big scares, it’s his unsettling characters that are perhaps most disturbing. The musician/director has had a surprising amount of success with his low budget slashers despite all of this though and just keeps churning movies out as a result.
While I would never exactly call any of his movies good, one of the more popular films in his catalogue and the one that arguably put him on the map as a horror director is 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects. This film, which starred Bill Moseley, Sid Haig and Sheri Moon Zombie as the murderous Firefly family was actually a follow-up to Zombie’s first movie, 2003’s House of a 1000 Corpses, but is perhaps more well known for its more brutal and visceral aesthetic. It’s a style Zombie has continued to adopt since in his movies.
It is also a story that Zombie wishes to return to as Bloody Disgusting reports that Zombie intends to make a follow-up to The Devil’s Rejects, though does not reveal exactly when the director intends to begin work on the film. It will be interesting to see exactly what form this follow-up takes as the Firefly family didn’t exactly survive that film and so it could either be a prequel featuring the same cast and a story that builds up to their murderous rampage or possibly a sequel featuring a completely different cast inspired by their killings.
Personally, I try to avoid watching Zombie films, no because I fund them terrifying or too gory, but because I find them a little silly. Still, based on the fact that he is still making movies I’m assuming some of you out there might be looking forward to this news.
