It’s been hailed as one of the best films of the year, and it looks like the public agrees, as the North American box office went ape for apes.Knocking Transformers: Age Of Extinction down to the second spot, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes debuted with a very strong $73 million. That’s an improvement over the last film ($54.8 million) and higher than last summer’s World War Z ($66.4 million). While it isn’t in the $90 million region of other blockbusters this year, it’s still a fantastic opening for what is being hailed as the 2014 must-see movie. Here’s how everyone else did on the weekend:
- Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes – $73 Million
- Transformers: Age Of Extinction – $16.5 Million
- Tammy – $12.9 Million
- 22 Jump Street – $6.7 Million
- How To Train Your Dragon 2 – $5.8 Million
- Earth To Echo – $5.5 Million
- Deliver Us From Evil – $4.7 Million
- Maleficent – $4.1 Million
- Begin Again – $2.9 Million
- Jersey Boys – $2.5 Million
Top ten departures this week include Think Like A Man Too and Edge Of Tomorrow. The Kevin Hart sequel managed to make $64 million worldwide, a disappointment when compared to the original film that made $96 million internationally with a budget half the size of the second film. As for the latest Tom Cruise sci-fi actioner, Edge Of Tomorrow made $343 million over a six week run. That’s another under-performing film, as Edge Of Tomorrow will be lucky if it breaks even when the production budget and advertising campaign are added up, despite the film receiving positive reviews.
