Showmax finally heads to consoles with Xbox One app

By Geoffrey Tim
August 29, 2017 - 8 years ago

I’m a loyal Netflix adherent, and I have been for years now – even after the company started messing everything up with the DNS and VPN bans. That said, South Africa’s own streaming services have a lot to offer, with Naspers-owned Showmax at the fore - and it's now available on console.

The LG V30 is upgrading its superb audio and throwing in a proper wide-angle camera lens

By Darryn Bonthuys
August 29, 2017 - 8 years ago

The V20 may have had a few gimmicks layered into its design, but the audio department was aces. It stroked my cochlea with sublime Quad-DAC hardware that sounded beauitful with the right headset. The LG V30 sounds like it’ll be playing to those strengths then, as LG’s next flagship is doubling down on the audio department and then some.

HP enters the premium gaming laptop arena with the Omen X Laptop

By Geoffrey Tim
August 22, 2017 - 8 years ago

HP’s Omen range of systems is generally powerful enough, but it’s the stuff that’s appended with an “X” that really gets interesting. Usually reserved for their desktops, the X signifies that the system packs in the bleeding edge, or is emboldened by some sort of radical design.

Domino DM368 3G Smartwatch review – Excellent hardware, not so great software

By Geoffrey Tim
August 21, 2017 - 8 years ago

In the end, there’s an impressive amount of tech packed into a tiny space. For its price, it stuffed with a wealth of features that you’d struggle to find in more expensive and more established wearables. Unfortunately, as good as its hardware is, it's let down by some genuinely frustrating companion software.

Razer Kraken Pro V2 review – A simple, great quality no-frills headset

By Geoffrey Tim
August 17, 2017 - 8 years ago

It’s a pretty good headset for its price, and locally its price (R1299) very nearly aligns with its current US one of $80. If you’re looking for something that offers good quality but no frills, you could do far worse

The Nokia 8 flagship revealed, with a “bothie” mode

By Geoffrey Tim
August 17, 2017 - 8 years ago

HMD Global, the Finnish company that has the licence to make phones bearing the Nokia name has revealed its new, eagerly anticipated Nokia 8. It’s the first Android phone to have the Nokia branding, which is exciting stuff – but the phone itself is really just par for what you’d expect from a modern flagship.

Motorola patents a self-repairing mobile phone screen

By Geoffrey Tim
August 16, 2017 - 8 years ago

Motorola could be planning to release a phone that had a screen utilising thermal black magic to heal itself when cracked or damaged. The phone would theoretically detect when the screen was damaged in some way, and engage its healing mechanisms, which rely on the screen being made out of a “transparent plastic or glass-like polymer.”

“Smart Locks” bricked by bad OTA firmware update

By Geoffrey Tim
August 16, 2017 - 8 years ago

Smart Locks are the future. They’re internet-connected locks that enable remote clocking and opening, opening via smartphone, and also allow owners to generate single or timed use codes to allow entry. Smart Locks are also the future of getting locked out of your own damned house.

Razer’s new Atheris is the real Adaptive Frequency mouse you want

By Alessandro Barbosa
August 16, 2017 - 8 years ago

Razer's expensive Lancehead mouse might have been a bridge too far, but the Atheris packs a punch for nearly a third of the price.

Leaked Nikon D850 marketing slides confirm core features

By Geoffrey Tim
August 14, 2017 - 8 years ago

Rumours around Nikon’s upcoming D850 has set the internet ablaze, with fans of the Japanese photography giant’s next flagship camera becoming increasingly impatient for an official reveal.

LG’s V30 gets an upgraded UX and neat camera features

By Geoffrey Tim
August 14, 2017 - 8 years ago

I’ve been salivating over the prospect of LG’s impending new flagship, the V30 for some time now. It looks like the V30 – due to be fully revealed at IFA Berlin at the end of this month – is going to do for photography and video capture what the V20 did for audio.
