Dodgy sites continue mining cryptocurrency even after you close your browser

By Geoffrey Tim
November 30, 2017 - 8 years ago

Earlier this year, we told you that a few dodgy sites were surreptitiously running cryptocurrency miners in the background. Now some dodgy sites are making it so they continue to mine from your PC, even after you’ve closed your browser

YouTube admits its “creators are currently being hurt” by demonetisation

By Geoffrey Tim
November 30, 2017 - 8 years ago

YouTube’s got a big problem right now, and I’m not talking about the overabundance of hyperbolic, overenthusiastic product shills. Many of its most prolific creators are finding their videos demonetised before they’ve even gone live. Creators - particularly those who rely on YouTube’s ad money to live – are understandably upset, and many are contemplating abandoning the platform.

Over a million VR headsets were shipped in the last quarter

By Geoffrey Tim
November 29, 2017 - 8 years ago

The prohibitive cost means that uptake of VR devices has been slower than anticipated – leading many to brush it all off as a gimmick. That seems to be slowly changing. For the first time, sales of VR headsets have exceeded a million units in a single quarter.

Logitech G413 Carbon Mechanical Keyboard review – A good entry-level mechanical keyboard

By Geoffrey Tim
November 29, 2017 - 8 years ago

Overall though, it’s a great entry-level mechanical keyboard. It may be light on features, but offers the same typing experience you’ll find in Logitech’s premium keyboards. Yes, some better lighting choices and the inclusion of a wrist rest would be nice, but they’d escalate the price.

Did you just buy yourself a shiny new 4K TV this Black Friday? Congratulations! You’re at the cutting edge of consumer-level display technology. But not for long.

Casio’s EXTREME action camera may be the toughest of the lot

By Darryn Bonthuys
November 24, 2017 - 8 years ago

Just how much abuse can these cameras take? Like my music teacher would say when she was asked how often she hit me so that I could learn to piano properly, the answer is “a fair amount”. Most action cameras on the market today make use of plastic casings to seal those devices away from harm, but they still require you to not handle them with stupid fingers. Casio’s G'z Eye GZE-1, doesn’t want to take that chance.

Hisense C30 Rock Lite review – A durable phone that’s Lite on the wallet

By Geoffrey Tim
November 22, 2017 - 8 years ago

There’s not too much to say about the C30 Rock Lite, because it’s a phone that – as its name implies - is light on features. What it lacks in power though, it more than makes up for in its durability, battery life, and most importantly, price.

Here’s your first look at the mirrorless lens Leica CL

By Darryn Bonthuys
November 22, 2017 - 8 years ago

Leica’s strengths are in its finer details, miniscule differences that only the most eagle-eyed of photographers will really spot. You’re paying for a reassurance of quality essentially. A quality that Leica wants to add to its very first mirrorless lens camera. Pictures of the Leica CL camera have managed to leak on the net.

The Nintendo Switch is Time Magazine’s top gadget of the year

By Geoffrey Tim
November 21, 2017 - 8 years ago

Nintendo’s Switch is the gaming industry darling right now. After the dismal failure of the company’s last home console, the beleaguered Wii U, Nintendo needed to hit a home run with their hybrid handheld. A few design issues aside, they’ve knocked it out of the park – delivering a system that allows home-console quality games to be played from the couch, or on-the-go.

Razer’s new Blackwidow mechanical keyboard is water, dust and idiot-resistant

By Darryn Bonthuys
November 15, 2017 - 8 years ago

If only my laptop keyboard and any other typing device for that matter, had been insulated against gross liquid incompetency. Razer might have a solution for that dimwit dilemma of mine.
