Sony’s smartphone business will focus on only four regions – and no, South Africa isn’t one of them

By Geoffrey Tim
May 23, 2019 - 7 years ago

In the middle of last year, we told you there were rumours that Sony’s mobile division was shrinking, and that it would soon pull out of regions where it wasn’t excelling. Regions like South Africa. While that didn’t quite come to pass, the rumours made sense. Sony’s mobile market share has dwindled to the point of irrelevance, losing money for the Japanese tech giant year after year. Now, Sony’s officially confirmed that it’ll “defocus” its attention on the smartphone market, except in the few regions where it still has an impact.

GOG Galaxy is relaunching as a unified client that’s the “all-in-one solution for the present-day gamer”

By Geoffrey Tim
May 23, 2019 - 7 years ago

There are too many damned PC Gaming clients. You’ve got Steam, Epic, uPlay, Origin, Bethesda’s Launcher, Itch.io, Battle.net and the uh…Windows Store. Then there’s GOG’s Galaxy, a bit of a rubbish client that I only used because I bought the Witcher 3 through that storefront. They all offer different features and functionality, and it can be a bit tiresome juggling all of these just to play some video games.

Game over: The OUYA store is being shut down for good

By Geoffrey Tim
May 22, 2019 - 7 years ago

Unfortunately, production and quality problems arose and the OUYA was a dud. The business was later sold off to Razer, who retooled the thing and released it as the Razer Forge. That system was also a commercial failure and was discontinued in 2016. Razer has now announced that the OUYA store is shutting down.

Fujifilm X-T3 Review – The X-factor

By Darryn Bonthuys
May 21, 2019 - 7 years ago

Fujifilm’s best camera to date, the X-T3 has plenty to love: A rugged design, an autofocus system that leaves the competition in the dust and a suite of video options that could easily record a Hollywood blockbuster all on its lonesome. A few issues still plagues the X-T3 from being the best of the best, but the pros definitely do outweigh the cons in this case.

The US has eased the Huawei ban for 90 days

By Geoffrey Tim
May 21, 2019 - 7 years ago

Thankfully, the US has temporarily eased the restrictions on Huawei, an action that will stand for the next 90 days. It’ll allow Huawei to continue to support existing products and maintain their networks, but won’t allow then to buy new components to manufacture new products.

Huawei has lost access to Google and Android after Trump blacklist

By Geoffrey Tim
May 20, 2019 - 7 years ago

As part of the fallout from the ongoing trade war between the US and China, Huawei has now lost access to Android and its apps. There’s a Trump-led US crackdown on Chinese technologies, ostensibly because of security concerns – though it more likely than not boils down to money. Under the new executive order signed by trump last week, the secretary of commerce has the power to prevent US-based companies with foreign ones that are deemed a security risk.
