Friday Debate: Your private data probably isn’t private–but do you even care?

By Geoffrey Tim

There’s an adage around social media platforms and their associated apps and service: If you’re not paying for it, then you’re the product. It’s entirely reductive, of course – but it’s the belief that if a website or service is pending its time and resources to give you content without asking for anything in return, then they are probably selling information about you to others to make money, to sell ads or worse – some other nefarious purpose.

When streamers like Ninja are pulling in the likes of Drake and breaking viewing records on Twitch, the impact of Chat is more significant than ever as the first touch point many non-gamers will have interacting with our community. We shouldn’t need to wait for a pro player to have their career significantly destroyed to realise that Twitch Chat is a largely under-addressed aspect of gaming culture that has very few positive contributions.

Friday Debate: South Africans make the best movie villains

By Darryn Bonthuys
February 9, 2018

There's a cinematic legacy attached to us that paints most South Africans as villains. Sure, there’s the utterly detestable kind of villain as seen in the racist cabal that harrassed Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon 2. But there’s also another kind of local villain that I adore seeing on the big screen: The South African gun for hire.
