Friday Debate: Only barbarians eat cereal with hot milk

By Geoffrey Tim
April 20, 2018 - 7 years ago

A week or two back though, Darryn started a twitter conversation that spilled over into all of the other social channels I’m in. It also eroded what little respect I had for him – and for much of humanity in general. I discovered on that day, that many people eat their cereal with hot milk. What? WHY?

Friday Debate: Are you a sucker for any superstitions?

By Geoffrey Tim
April 13, 2018 - 7 years ago

It’s Friday the 13th! For many, it’s an ill omen, a sign of impending misfortune – for other like me, it’s a meaningless day. It’s a Friday, and Friday the 13th is better than Monday the anything. Triskaidekaphobia is a very real thing, and one of the more prevalent superstitions. While I don’t consider myself a superstitious person at all, I’ll still pause when I have to say, walk under a ladder, or open an umbrella indoors. Then I’ll do it anyway as reason overrides the bits of my brain that have these long-ingrained superstitions in them.

Friday Debate: Your private data probably isn’t private–but do you even care?

By Geoffrey Tim
March 23, 2018 - 8 years ago

There’s an adage around social media platforms and their associated apps and service: If you’re not paying for it, then you’re the product. It’s entirely reductive, of course – but it’s the belief that if a website or service is pending its time and resources to give you content without asking for anything in return, then they are probably selling information about you to others to make money, to sell ads or worse – some other nefarious purpose.

The ten best road trip songs

By Darryn Bonthuys
March 19, 2018 - 8 years ago

There’s something absolutely magical about the right track at the right time on a lonely length of tarmac, that just lifts your spirits up and keeps your road senses sharp while your feet dance on the pedals. It’s a feeling that is magnified when you have company in the car, and everyone happens to know the song in question.

The UK’s NHS cracks down on Homeopathy (and that’s good because Homeopathy is rubbish)

By Geoffrey Tim
March 14, 2018 - 8 years ago

There are few things that get me quite as riled up as walking in to a pharmacy – a place that dispenses medicine – and finding its shelves filled with homeopathic nonsense. I’m always tempted to have a bunch of stickers printed that say “This is not medicine” and plaster them all over the homeopathic junk littering shelves.

By Geoffrey Tim
March 8, 2018 - 8 years ago

In 2000, South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public spaces. In 2009, smoking in partially enclosed spaces became illegal. We actually have strict smoking legislation – and it’s set to become stricter.
