Batman’s rogues gallery are going to war with each other

By Darryn Bonthuys
April 4, 2017 - 9 years ago

When it comes to villains, it’s hard to top the dark knight. Generally speaking, I’d prefer to have less than capable people nursing a massive haterection for me, but Batman regularly finds himself challenged by people who can put his mental or physical prowess. Sometimes even both depending on the flavour of the week. Batman’s assorted rogues don’t exactly get …

Marvel responds to their “diversity initiative” and current comic book sales slump

By Darryn Bonthuys
April 3, 2017 - 9 years ago

For decades Marvel was known as the House of Ideas. Lately though? Those ideas seem to have run out, with the Disney-owned publisher pushing every single event it could think of out of the gate in at attempt to claw back some of the market share it lost to other rivals. So who’s to blame for the current slump then? You’d think with a multimedia juggernaut behind them that Marvel would be selling multiple runs of any comics with ease, but that’s not the case. And it’s all the fault of diversity. At least that’s what Marvel VP of Sales David Gabriel thought during an interview at a Marvel Retailer Summit.

March 31, 2017 - 9 years ago

The latest Megatron action figure is going to bust a safety cap on release

By Darryn Bonthuys
March 29, 2017 - 9 years ago

This year’s release of the Takara Tomy Transformers Masterpiece MP-36 Megatron is going full G1 when it hits shelves, but there’s a caveat attached to it. America and Australia happens to have some particularly tough laws regarding plastic guns (and proper guns in Oz at least, because they’re actually a sensible lot). What that means, is that manufacturers will have to open that mint packaging and attach an orange cap to Megatron lest some child get the $100+ figure in their hands, transform and go look for a fight with a cop. Not the brightest idea to pursue in the US.

Hot Toys’ newest Spider-Man figure certainly looks homemade

By Darryn Bonthuys
March 27, 2017 - 9 years ago

And then there’s Spider-Man. If you were 15 and you had no income to rely on, getting your hands on a decent costume would be an uphill struggle to say the least. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, that’s a fact that is made clear when you see Tom Holland’s first suit as the spectacular vigilante. It just screams homemade.

Marvel’s Generations explained – A titanic team-up of heroes new and old

By Darryn Bonthuys
March 27, 2017 - 9 years ago

Times have changed over at Marvel. A new generation of heroes have risen, some good and some bad. While characters such as Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan and Miles Morales feel like worthy successors to the identities that they’ve claimed as Hawkeye, Miss Marvel and Spider-Man respectively, other new additions feel ham-fisted and forced upon readers so far. It’s very much old school and new school clashing right now, something that Marvel is looking to fix with their upcoming Generations event that’ll run from July through to September over the course of ten of their books

Action Comics and Superman just rewrote the DC Comics universe

By Darryn Bonthuys
March 24, 2017 - 9 years ago

DC Comics have always had a somewhat workable solution to decades of baggage: Reboots. Kicking off with Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, DC would flip the switch again with soft tweaks in Zero Hour: Crisis in Time in 1994, Infinite Crisis in 2005 and the larger ramifications of 2011’s Flashpoint Paradox that led to the birth of the New 52 universe. A universe which has now been rebooted once again, with very little fanfare or announcement in the latest issue of Action Comics.

All Star Batman will reveal Duke’s future and role within the DCU soon

By Darryn Bonthuys
March 20, 2017 - 9 years ago

Introduced during the Zero Year of Scott Snyder’s run on Batman, Duke Thomas represents the best of his generation: Courage, commitment and motivation. DC Comics have been building him up for a few years now, first as a new breed of Robin and then as something else. Not a Batman nor a Robin, but the future of Gotham City. And that’s just the start of Duke’s journey.
