Marvel debuts the “industry-changing” direction its taking with 52 new Legacy covers

By Darryn Bonthuys
June 26, 2017 - 8 years ago

I’ve been trying to make some sense all morning of the current state of Marvel comics, following the weekend reveal of 52 new covers (sort of rings a bell) that will chart the direction of the Marvel Universe in the wake of Secret Empire and the Legacy mini-series that aims to re-establish the status quo of several familiar icons. All I see is creative bankruptcy.

By Darryn Bonthuys

So how did one puppy-loving extinction event on two legs become a legend in a secret society? That’s the question that comic book writer Greg Pak and artist Giovanni Valletta will be answering in a new solo John Wick series that chronicles the early days of the hitman before he earned his reputation as an unstoppable gun for hire.

Injustice writer Tom Taylor talks about his darker take on Superman

By Darryn Bonthuys
June 5, 2017 - 8 years ago

His wife Lois Lane, unborn child and most of Metropolis dead thanks to the machinations of the Joker, Superman did what any living solar battery powerhouse would do: End the Joker once and for all, crossing a line that he never came back from as he descended further into tyranny over the course of the first year of the Injustice comic books. A plot twist that earned writer Tom Taylor plenty of hate from the internet.

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn almost came from space instead of hell

By Darryn Bonthuys
June 2, 2017 - 8 years ago

Spawn was the DOOM of comic books in the 1990s. It was everything that your mom didn’t want you to read, a bad influence with gorgeous art. It was also almost completely different before Todd McFarlane applied some of the brimstone undertones to it. An early version of the iconic antihero hailed not from the pits of Hell but rather space.

Steve Rogers has another familiar soldier on his side in Secret Empire #3

By Darryn Bonthuys
June 1, 2017 - 8 years ago

Secret Empire #3 further solidifies the reach of Captain America and HYDRA, but a resistance is growing. While Star Lord’s attempt to recruit some help from the Skrull, Kree and Shi-Ar goes disastrously wrong (hey at least we know that Rocket Raccoon is a Wu Tang fan now), the likes of the Black Widow and Hawkeye are busy cooking up a plot all of their own in this very busy issue.
